Teaching Environmental Science
Teaching Environmental Science (TES), implemented by Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi – College of Education, includes environmental science courses that focus on training key educators and leaders to subsequently train others within their organizations or community. The project’s objective is to provide specialized natural resource curricula materials and training to area teachers for their use in teaching natural resource stewardship.
In 2003, more than 250 teachers completed Teaching Environmental Science programs statewide and 90% indicated that they would not only teach more science as a result of taking the class but also planned to start environmental projects in their schools. Further, 95% agreed that materials received during the TES class were relevant to their science curriculum and would be used in the classroom. Perhaps most impressive were the following:
• 98 % agreed that TES provided them with new information about their community and issues in general
• 97% agreed that creating lessons and using environmental issues would help their students use critical thinking and problem solving skills
• 97% indicated that TES helped them to appreciate the resources and unique qualities of their communities.
TES III served as the pilot program for the LOTE project by merging a weeklong training for teachers focused on the local ecology. TES along with the LOTE project, enhance teachers’ knowledge of the local ecology and environmental concerns relevant to this area.
